Bariatric wheelchair transportation may be appropriate for passengers whose body size, wheelchair size, mobility equipment, or positioning needs require more interior room than a standard vehicle can safely provide.
The passenger may be traveling to a medical appointment, dialysis treatment, rehabilitation facility, hospital discharge, specialist visit, airport, family destination, or another approved location.
AccessWay does not provide stretcher transportation. The passenger must be able to travel safely while seated in an approved wheelchair or passenger seat.

Bariatric Transportation Pre-Trip Review
The complete passenger and wheelchair information must be reviewed before AccessWay can determine whether the trip can be safely accommodated.
Wheelchair Dimensions
Provide the wheelchair’s total width, length, height, and turning requirements, including footrests, headrests, bags, and accessories.
Combined Weight
The combined weight of the passenger, wheelchair, oxygen, batteries, and attached equipment must remain within applicable lift, vehicle, and securement limits.
Wheelchair Type
Confirm whether the passenger uses a manual, power, reclining, tilt-in-space, or other wheelchair configuration.
Pickup Accessibility
Describe stairs, narrow hallways, steep slopes, gravel, uneven surfaces, door widths, ramps, elevators, and other access concerns.
Medical Equipment
Disclose portable oxygen, bags, pumps, wheelchair accessories, or other equipment that must travel with the passenger.
Additional Passengers
Family members and caregivers must be confirmed in advance so seating, interior space, and securement areas can be evaluated.

Wheelchair Lift and Securement Procedures
Wheelchair Inspection
The wheelchair and attached equipment are reviewed for fit, positioning, stability, and securement access.
Rear Lift Boarding
The wheelchair is positioned on the rear lift according to safe operating procedures and applicable lift limitations.
Interior Positioning
The chair must fit within the designated securement location without blocking aisles, exits, or required equipment.
Four-Point Securement
The wheelchair is secured using a four-point tie-down system, with a separate lap and shoulder restraint for the passenger.
AccessWay drivers do not lift, carry, or manually transfer passengers. The passenger must be able to remain safely positioned in the approved wheelchair or passenger seat throughout transportation.
RESPECTFUL PASSENGER ASSISTANCE
Compassionate Door-to-Door Service
Assistance may be provided from the pickup entrance to the vehicle and from the vehicle to the destination entrance when the route is safe, accessible, and within the driver’s permitted scope.
Additional boarding, positioning, and unloading time is built into trip planning when the passenger’s needs are disclosed in advance.

Hospital staff, discharge planners, social workers, families, rehabilitation facilities, and authorized contacts may request transportation on behalf of the passenger.
